The Cotoneaster is a large genus of flowering plants in the rose family (Rosaceae), known for its versatility as an ornamental plant in landscaping. The genus includes a wide variety of species that can be deciduous, semi-evergreen, or evergreen shrubs and small trees, ranging from low-growing ground covers to tall hedges

Key Characteristics

  • Foliage: Leaves are typically small, oval, and entire (smooth-edged), arranged alternately on the stem. They are usually dark green, and many deciduous species provide spectacular autumn colors in shades of orange, red, and purple.
  • Flowers: In late spring to early summer, they produce clusters of small, five-petaled flowers, typically white or pale pink. These flowers are a valuable source of nectar, attracting pollinators such as bees and butterflies.
  • Berries (Pomes): The most notable feature is the abundance of bright, showy berries (technically small pome fruits) that appear in late summer and often persist through autumn and winter. Berry colors range from red and orange to pink, or occasionally yellow, maroon or black, and they serve as a vital food source for birds.
