Vachellia gerrardii (Acacia gerrardii) 

Other Names: Rooidoring, rooibas, rooihaakdoring, swarthaakdoring, engelsedoring (afrikaans)

This tree, with its reddish underbark, is up to 10m high.  The dark green bipinnate leaves occur on dwarf branches and have spinescent stipules.  Small, regular, bisexual flowers are contained within creamy white, condensed spikes.

Sowing instructions: Sow seeds in summer in a well-drained medium.

  • Hardiness and Drought Resistance: Highly tolerant of dry conditions and a variety of soil types.
  • Growth: Can grow up to 14 meters tall but is often found at around 9 meters.
  • Bark: Grey with reddish underbark and fissures.
  • Leaves: Dark green, bipinnate, and tufted on woody cushions with paired spines.
  • Flowers: Creamy-white, spherical, and highly fragrant.
  • Pods: Sickle-shaped, flattened, and dehiscent.
